thank you for your support

We welcome the government’s announcement that it is supportive of the spirit of the ‘independent abortion counselling’ amendments and that it intends to bring forward proposals for regulations. We look forward to continuing to work with government to secure proper investigation of all the relevant issues and to ensuring that women considering abortion are provided with the opportunity to access the information, advice and counselling that they deserve. Please check back for further developments.

Abortion advice & the conflict of interest.

Abortion is a major decision. Many women say that they continue to feel the consequences long afterwards.

Many people assume that women considering abortion have access to independent information and advice. In fact there is no legal guarantee that they do. And where counselling is available, it is often provided by the very same private providers that carry out abortions.

How can women be sure that they are getting independent information and advice when it comes from organisations that rely so heavily on charging the NHS for each abortion they carry out and so have a vested financial interest in an abortion going ahead.

Is it any surprise that many women say that they feel rushed and pressured into having an abortion?

Many women suffer with the trauma of abortion for a long time afterward.

And recent scientific research suggests that women who have an abortion face an increased risk of 81% of developing mental health problems (see here) whilst the link between abortion and premature delivery of babies in subsequent pregnancies is now well established.

The present arrangements don’t serve women’s best interests.

But now there’s a chance for change.

As a result of an amendment to the Health and Social Care Bill the government has announced that it will launch a consultation on the issue and bring forward proposals for regulations. Right to Know is campaigning to ensure that that all women considering abortion will have access to independent advice and counselling - provided by someone with no vested financial interest in the outcome of their decision. Read more about what’s happening or Act now.

The Right to Know Campaign was formed to support an amendment to the Health and Social Care Bill to ensure that women considering an abortion would be guaranteed access to independent information and advice from someone who had no vested financial interest in the outcome of their decision. We are pleased that the subject of independent abortion counselling is now to be subject to a government consultation.
